Synopsis
On a searing, cloudless night in Brussels, Henri Castang witnesses a savage attack. He escapes with his life but his friends do not and Castang decides that thirty years as a Police Inspector are enough. Castang escapes a career that has claimed so many of his friends but even as he holidays in Biarritz, there are inescapable demons, which haunt him. His granddaughter is abducted.

But the placidity of semi-rural life is short-lived. Before time and retirement dull his sharp edge, Castang's young granddaughter is kidnapped and the sinister real estate mogul who has been lurking around Castang's property becomes the suspect. Inspector Castang has been entertaining Nicholas Freeling's readers for years with his lightning-fast intelligence and finely honed, facetious wit. About the Author
A true master of popular crime fiction and creator of the ever-popular Inspector van der Valk and Henri Castang, Nicolas Freeling has written more than thirty books and has an innate empathy with France and its culture. Born at the Grays Inn Rd., St. Pancras London 1927, Freeling has lived much of his life in Europe, notably the Vosges hills and Strasbourg. He spent his first fifteen years as a cook in expensive restaurants before turning to writing.
