Despite the pastoral beauty of the English countryside, Kate slowly discovers a community full of secrets. As she is drawn into a web of romance and deceit, she sometimes misreads the actions and intentions of those around her, imposing her own interpretation on events. Limited to Kate's perspective, the reader often flounders with her, uncertain who is friend or foe. In fact the problem of how "facts" can be interpreted in many ways lies at the heart of the novel.
