Lovely Kate Borrow could hear a girl's haunting voice singing in the darkness that first eerie night she arrived in Kinning, the English village where she was to teach during World War II. Later Kate would believe she knew both the girl and the chilling secrets of this close-knit community. Perhaps her youth - or her romantic dreams about James Conrad, the brooding owner of Kinning Hall - misled her, but the strange disappearance of a student, the beautiful Celia Mond, would lead Kate to walk in a shadowy wood of dark passions and betrayals to discover who in Kinning was capable of murder.

From Publishers Weekly:
"The ease with which the mind can falsify," and the potentially disastrous consequences of such falsifications, are the underlying themes of this uncommonly meaningful romantic suspense novel set in England during WW II. As soon as schoolteacher Kate Borrow arrives in the placid village of Kinning, she becomes romantically involved with James Conrad. Ruled by instinct more than reality, Kate ascribes James's moodiness to guilt over not serving in the war and his father's suicide, but she fails to recognize his mental instability. Her judgments are equally skewed on college student Celia Mond, a Kinning native whom Kate decides is a sweet, guileless ingenue whose secret lover must be Edmund Westmain, the girl's former teacher. Her imagination run rampant, Kate attempts to prove that Westmain is a callous playboy responsible for Celia's mysterious disappearance. English novelist Gilbert ( The Long Shadow ) brings finely crafted prose and rich meditative passages to a tale marked by intellectual touches such as Kate's teaching of Milton's Comus , a work with parallels to the story.

From Library Journal:
During World War II, Kate Borrow travels to the village of Kinning to replace a male teacher called up for national service. Despite the pastoral beauty of the English countryside, Kate slowly discovers a community full of secrets. As she is drawn into a web of romance and deceit, she sometimes misreads the actions and intentions of those around her, imposing her own interpretation on events. Limited to Kate's perspective, the reader often flounders with her, uncertain who is friend or foe. In fact the problem of how "facts" can be interpreted in many ways lies at the heart of the novel. The twists of plot propel the reader through the story, which is certain to captivate those who like their romance spiced with suspense. By the author of Miss Bede Is Staying (LJ 3/15/83).
