One windy summer day on the beach at St. Ives, an artist makes a sand sculpture of a horse. It takes an entire day, and all the people walking by stop to admire the magnificent creature. But when everyone goes home at the end of the day, the sand horse can hear the white horses of the surf calling to him: "Come with us to Sennen, Land's End, and Longships Light!" and he longs to join them. This poetic and haunting tale is memorably illustrated by Greenaway Medal Winner Michael Foreman.

About the Author:
Michael Foreman is one of the most talented and popular creators of children's books today. He has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and his highly acclaimed books are published all over the world.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3--An artist on an English sea shore spends a day sand-sculpting a full-size galloping horse. After he and the other beachgoers leave for the day, the sand horse comes alive and the "white horses" of the waves entice him to join them. The text conveys the mood appropriately, except for an abrupt transition between the daylight reality and the evening's transforma tion. When reading the story aloud to younger children, adults will need to provide an explanation of sand and tide before the horse's disppearance; imagi native preschoolers may be disturbed by the description, "The sea sucked and pulled. It was pulling him down the beach." Most will enjoy the book's pri mary appeal, the double-page spreads of watercolors with inked details. Warm colors evoke the glow of the shore in daylight, while deep blues mark the horse's entry into the mystical evening. This is a natural for coastal communities, and it could inspire a sto ry-craft program on sand sculpture.
