Synopsis

Malaghan stirs kidnapping, extortion, multiple murder attempts, suspenseful chases, ancient puzzles, and buried treasure into a formulaic but engrossing page-turner set on an invented Greek island named Thelta. When their archaeologist parents are seized by a crazed local tycoon, Callie and her younger brother, Nick, set off to save them with a frantic search of Thelta's many ruins for three keys to a fabled Mycenaean treasure trove. Giving his central characters entertainingly different personalities and a supporting cast of colorfully exaggerated character types, the author plunges Callie and Nick into and out of one dangerous escapade after another. He's not hesitant about slipping in the occasional aptly timed earthquake or well-placed cliff to move events along (and he's not quite up on his Greek, misnaming a mythical man-lion a “Leonotaur”), but readers swept up in the nonstop action aren't likely to mind such contrivances.
