This book is designed to help adults explain dyslexia to children. It provides information about the most common types of dyslexia: trouble with sounds, remembering how letters and words look, finding words, and mixed dyslexia. He deals with the basic facts and adopts a style which is accessible to children without talking down to them.
It was my experience that parents and teachers often do not know how to explain to children why they find reading, spelling, and other parts of school so hard. Unfortunately, this leaves it up to the children's imaginations to come up with answers. My goal in writing this book was to provide adults with a way to talk with children about their difficulties when the time is right. It is not a book that will diagnose dyslexia, that can only be done by a qualified professional. But it is a book that is honest, direct, and will provide understandable answers to children's (and adults') questions, and help them recognize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and that they are smart and courageous even though some parts of school are hard.
