Review:
Coffee-table books which explore regions of Wales in both words and pictures are an attractive genre. There would appear to be a problem, however, in so far as the production costs involved are probably steep and the cost to the reading public correspondingly high. Beloved Tywi is worth every penny of twenty pounds, for it is a superb visual celebration of the 67 mile course of the river from the Cambrian Mountains to the sea. The book is divided into four sections which take us from the source of the Tywi to Llansteffan. The text which accompanies the colour photographs includes a useful potted history of the area encompassed by Gwilym Hughes and a foreword by the Welsh poet Mererid Hopwood. There are also no less than twenty-two further short items on various aspects of the history, wildlife and culture of this unique part of Wales. In his introduction, photographer Ken Day writes that most of the images in the book were planned. Some though are happy accidents. Being there with a camera when that special view with that special light comes into sight is a rare combination . . . Without exception the photographs included are magnificent and readers will quickly choose their favourites. One of mine was of low cloud over the river from Merlins hill which reveals a mystical landscape. All the publishing companies of Wales have now achieved a high standard in terms of the design quality of their titles and Gomer are certainly no exception. I hope that they may one day decide to commission a volume with a similar format focussing on my own Welsh region, the Vale of Clwyd.
