About the Author

Rod Baker trained as a pilot in Zimbabwe before taking up a career in journalism. In an editing and publishing career spanning more than 30 years, he has achieved senior positions in both magazine and book publishing, and is the author of a home care and safety handbook entitled The Home Advisor (2002). David Bass, M.Med (Surg) (UCT), FCS(SA) trained as a general surgeon in South Africa and the UK. Special interests in children, emergency medicine and injury prevention led to his appointments in 1987 as senior surgeon and head of the paediatric trauma service at Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, and director of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa in 1992. He was a founder member of the child abuse management service at Red Cross Children's Hospital. Dr Bass obtained his instructor's card in Advanced Trauma Life Support and was the first South African to be certified in the UK as an instructor in Advanced Paediatric Life Support. He has published widely on a variety of medical subjects, including children's injuries and injury prevention. Dr Bass currently works as a full-time medico-legal advisor.
