Developing this compendium of research on tourism in the developing world, Huybers (U. of New South Wales, Australia) reviewed papers from such peer-reviewed scholarly journals as Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, and Journal of Development Studies and selected 34 that collectively provided insights at a conceptual and theoretical level as well as empirical findings of applied studies and also are reflective of the debates over the pros and cons of tourism as a tool of development. The papers are organized into three sections that explore tourism and development in a general sense (as well as from political economy and government involvement perspectives); economic views of tourism and development that take in questions of cost-benefit analysis, local economic linkages, international aspects, and the issue of scale in tourism development; and multidisciplinary perspectives of spatial, socio-cultural, environmental, and ethical issues.
