9781844256525: No Need to Die: American Flyers in RAF Bomber Command

Synopsis

This is the first book to be written about a group of remarkable men who left the wealth and comfort of America before the Second World War to volunteer for the most dangerous trade in the world. Few people know there were any Americans flying with RAF Bomber Command. The book  follows the life stories and flying careers of 21 Americans who fought in the air war over Europe with the RAF’s two premier Bomber Command squadrons – 9 and 617. Of these men of free will, 15 were killed in action. No Need To Die is a revelation, an untold human story from the Second World War.

Review

The Aptos Times

"Few people realize that prior to the United States' entry into World War II, a handful of Americans traveled to England to volunteer for service in the RAF Bomber Command. This volume recreates the stories and flying careers of 21 Americans who fought in the air war over Europe with the RAF's two premier Bomber Command squadrons...For the first time, Godron Thorburn tells the story of these men who left homes in Connecticut, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Colorado and many other states to seek adventure and fight Nazi Germany...

"Anyone interested in military aviation history or World War II will find this book a fascinating tale of some true unsung heores whose exploits have been largely forgotten."
