Gr. 4-7. The series title is A Painful History of Medicine, and the pages of this entry, part of Raintree's Freestyle umbrella series, are packed with grisly facts and gory images of everything from amputation and gangrene to blood, boils, and burns. But the science is accurate, and many readers will be intrigued by the medical drama, both what it was like before painkillers, antiseptics, and antibiotics and the wonder of scientific breakthroughs such as x-rays, lasers, and transplants. The exclamation points are unnecessary, and the frequent boldface type is intrusive. Curiosity will drive readers to the glossary and to the "word banks" that are located at the bottom of every page. The design, with lots of color pictures, captions, and boxes, will grab browsers, and the cover art is a thrilling story in itself. Pills, Powders, and Potions is another of several books also available in the new series. Hazel Rochman
