Reviewed with Veronica Ross' My First Hamster.
K-Gr. 2. Youngsters interested in taking on the responsibility of owning a pet will find these books in the My First Pet series very helpful. Tips on choosing a cat or hamster, feeding habits, providing an appropriate home, and keeping the pet clean and healthy are included. Cat, which also includes information on litter-box training and feline body language, encourages letting cats roam freely outdoors as long as they have appropriate identification and injections. Hamster will make a great addition to a primary-grade classroom with a pet hamster. The information is limited, but it is presented in an attractive, age-appropriate format, offering double spreads with easy-to-read type, colorful backgrounds, and lots of photographs of pets and kids. Although other sources will be needed to help children care for their pets, these titles provide enough for kids to determine if the pet they are considering is right for them. A glossary and a cautionary note to parents are appended. Lauren Peterson
