Kirsty Price is a nice, ordinary girl who works in a Glasgow fire station serving food and drink to the firefighters. She's also the daughter of Simon Price, an artist and tutor at the Glasgow School of Art. He is a notorious bully, whose victims include Kirsty and her brother Johnny, who is plagued with ill-health. One day, Kirsty's firefighter boyfriend Greg McFarlane phones to say he is attending a road accident and the car involved is Johnny's. Soon after Johnny's funeral, there's a knock at the door and Kirsty is shocked to see who's standing in the shadows outside...
