Jenny Bent's family live in Jamaica, but she has her home near London. Jenny began working as an illustrator after graduating from Harrow Art College. She has written and illustrated several books. She lectures in art and design and in 1992, she travelled to Nigeria on British Council bursary to hold children's book illustration workshops. John Agard is one of the most popular and highly-regarded poets writing in Britain today. His poem Half-Caste is on the GCSE syllabus and he performs at Poetry Live events throughout the country. His adult collection, We Brits, was shortlisted for the 2007 British Book Awards Decibel Writer of the Year Award. His book for teens, The Young Inferno, won the CLPE Poetry Prize Award in 2009, was nominated for both the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards in 2010 and shortlisted for the 2010 UKLA Award. Goldilocks on CCTV, his poetry collection for 11 plus, inspired by fairy tales, is on the 2012 CLPE Award shortlist. John lives in Lewes, Sussex, with his wife the poet Grace Nichols.
PreSchool-Grade 1–Ten four-line rhymes tell of a baby's day from morning to bedtime. The verses are simple, some with a staccato rhythm; others have softer sounds. However, there is an awkwardness due to some unusual word choices, possibly reflecting the book's British origins. For instance: "One day I'll sit botty/on what they call potty./Now I do in cotty/what I call a dotty." The brightly textured illustrations are heavy in crosshatching. The child who is the focal point looks to be a different age from one picture to the next. Overall, it is doubtful that the intended audience will be drawn to either the verses or the art. Pass this by, and give parents one of many great Mother Goose books instead.– Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
