Synopsis
Ruby lives in the city and Grandpa lives in the country. They write to each other and share the events in their lives. Ruby tells about the flights of stairs in their apartment block and the sights of the city. Grampa tells Ruby about the naughty magpies that live in his old oak tree. Through the Magpie Song, the events of the story unravel - three magpies for Ruby the magpie girl, one for a heart-breaking goodbye and six for a wonderful surprise that will change Ruby's life forever.

About the Author
Laurence Anholt is an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator and is co-creator of the best-selling Chimp and Zee (winner of the 2001 Smarties Gold Award). Among his many books for Frances Lincoln are the Anholt Artists books - Camille and the Sunflowers, Degas and the Little Dancer, Leonardo and the Flying Boy and Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail. Jim Coplestone studied Graphic Illustration at Exeter College of Art and completed an MA in Theatre Design. His rapport with children has led him to work as a primary school teacher, arts workshop leader and home-tutor and this is apparent in his lively ink pictures.

Kindergarten-Grade 3–City-dwelling Ruby exchanges letters with her grandfather, who lives in the country. She shares with him her excitement about the upcoming birth of a sibling and her fears over her father's loss of his job. Her grandfather in turn tells the child about the magpies that live near his house and teaches her The Magpie Song. Through their letters, her ailing Grampa shares his memories of Ruby's father's childhood and reveals a secret to his granddaughter. Then he passes away. Ruby and her family inherit his house and move to the country. Once there, Ruby remembers Grampa's secret: buried in the magpie tree, she finds a chest full of gold coins, ensuring that the family will no longer need to worry about money. This moving tale lovingly expresses the bond between a child and her grandfather. The story is accompanied by watercolor illustrations awash in soft pastels and outlined in pen and ink.
