In this fun and accessible book, children learn to develop their ability to "see" art in new ways. Each spread features a different painting and focuses on a different perspective -- up, down, around, inside, outside, and more. Simple text and questions invite children to examine each work more closely, giving them a better understanding of the painting and of artistic techniques. Engaging art activities offer additional participation and stimulation. The paintings represent a broad range of periods and include works by Mondrian, van Gogh, John Stewart Curry, Charles Sheeler, and Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Gillian Wolfe CBE is Director of Learning and Public Affairs at Dulwich Picture Gallery, one of the most renowned private collections in the UK. She also works as a freelance consultant, and has lectured all over the world. Her previous art books for children include My First Art Book, winner of the Parent Choice Silver Honour Award, USA; and Art Activity Book and Children's Art Book, both winners of the Gulbenkian Prize for Best Museum Publications of the Year. Her titles with Frances Lincoln include Look! Zoom in on Art, which won the English Association's Award for the best children's non-fiction book, Look! Body Language in Art, Look! Seeing the Light in Art and Look! Drawing the Line in Art. In 1995, Gillian was awarded an MBE and in 2005 the CBE for services to Arts Education. She lives in South London.
Grade 2-5-Eighteen paintings have been carefully chosen to invite children to look up, down, outside, inside, close up, all around, etc. Questions and activities on each spread encourage intense viewing. For example, "Look Behind" features two paintings, The Scullery Maid and William Hogarth's The Graham Children. For the former, the author asks, "What do you think will happen next?" and for the latter, "How would their lives have been different?" Work from the Renaissance to the present day is represented, and subjects include trapeze artists, clowns, trains, animals, and children. The last section, "Look It Up," functions as an index, giving biographical information about the artists and where to view the paintings. Unfortunately, it does not include answers to the questions asked throughout the text, and some of them will not be entirely clear, even upon careful viewing. For example, for Eric Ravilious's Train Landscape, the author asks, "How can you tell that this is an old-fashioned train?" Many children won't be able to answer this without help. Overall, though, this book is a good introduction to different ways of looking at art.
