Science School invites young readers to follow in the footsteps of the world’s greatest scientists with experiments that reveal how we keep things warm, how a submarine dives to the bottom of the ocean, and why a compass always points north. Featuring lively text and engaging color illustrations, the book helps children build a hovercraft, create a personal rainbow, design ghostly shadows, and make a volcano erupt!

Mick Manning grew up in Haworth, West Yorkshire, and studied Illustration at the Royal College of Art in London. He has written and illustrated over 60 books, mostly with his partner Brita Granstrom. Their distinctive books have won many awards. Their first book, The World is Full of Babies, won the Smarties Silver Prize in 1996. Their other books with Frances Lincoln include the critically acclaimed Fly on the Wall series: Roman Fort, Pharaoh's Egypt, Viking Longship, Greek Hero, Tail-End Charlie and What Mr Darwin Saw. Both Roman Fort and Viking Longship were shortlisted for the English Association 4-11 Awards and Greek Hero won in 2008. Snap! is the follow-up to Yuck! which was a regional winner of the Highland Book Awards 2006. Recently Mick and Brita donated the entire body of work created for their book Fly on the Wall: Greek Hero to Seven Stories, the center for children's books Mick and Brita live in the Scottish Borders and have four sons.
Grade 2-4-With large, colorful illustrations, an attractive layout, and step-by-step instructions, this engaging activity book invites readers to try out approximately 50 science experiments. After welcoming children to "Science School," a smiling teacher wearing a lab coat introduces matter, heat, air and water, forces, light, sound, and electricity. Each section begins with a paragraph of information and concludes with two to three relevant hands-on activities. "Science Tips" provide additional facts (such as how water evaporates, how shadows are formed, etc.). Most of the supplies can be found at home. Intended for home use or as a supplement to the science curriculum, the experiments are certain to pique children's interest and encourage them to reexamine common objects and occurrences. Although designed to introduce basic concepts, many of the activities may also be useful for formulating science-project ideas. Overall, a unique "school in a book" that markets science as a series of stimulating facts and activities.
