Captain James Cook was a master voyager and a seeker of knowledge who commanded three demanding scientific expeditions. He and his crews had encounters with peoples of the South Seas which led to mutual respect and trade, but also to misunderstanding and violence. His death at the hands of Hawaiians turned him into a legendary figure, a hero of the Enlightenment who was said to have sacrificed his life bringing ""civilization"" to the Pacific.Yet despite everything that is known about this sea captain's many adventures, the man himself remains shrouded in mystery. In this book, Dan O'Sullivan casts vivid light on Cook's character, teasing out his personality from the pages of his own journals.

About the Author:

Dan O'Sullivan is the author of The Age of Discovery 1400-1550 and Tudor Britain 1485-1603. He lives in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, the village where James Cook spent much of his childhood.

Review:

""His meticulous examination of Cook’s journals is a work of art in itself...I was attracted by the author’s personal style in which he informally addresses the reader in the first person...a most educational and enlightening read.""--Cliff Thornton of Cook's Log

""O'Sullivan has carefully re-examined [Cook's] writings to produce a penetrating study that goes farther than any other in observing what Cook actually said and how this changed over time as he grew in literary expertise, confidence and sophistication. O'Sullivan's knowledge of Cook's career, and of his eighteenth-century contemporaries, is astonishingly encyclopaedic; this enables him to create an image of Cook by filling in the spaces around him. Out of his efforts emerges at last as close a written portrait of Cook as it may be possible to achieve. This is no mean feat."" -Victor Suthren, International Journal of Maritime History ""A welcome addition...an interesting perspective"" -- Mark  M. Hull, International Journal of Naval History

Book Description I.B.Tauris Co. Ltd., United Kingdom, 2008. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Captain James Cook was the greatest explorer of his age, perhaps of any age. He was a leader of men, a master voyager who journeyed to unknown places, a seeker of knowledge who commanded three demanding scientific expeditions. He and his crews had encounters with peoples of the South Seas which could lead to mutual respect and trade, but also to misunderstanding and violence. Even before he died his exploits were widely admired. But his death at the hands of Hawaiians turned him into a legendary figure, a hero of the Enlightenment, who was said to have brought civilization to the Pacific while giving up his own life in the process. Yet despite everything that is known about Cook s life and many adventures, the man himself remains shrouded in mystery. With this book, Dan O Sullivan seeks to put this right and casts vivid light on Cook s character, teasing out his personality from the pages of his own journals. As well as an original and illuminating re-examination of Cook s complex character, this is also a vivid introduction to his life and times which is essential reading for anyone with an interest in this incomparable sea-captain.
