Synopsis
When Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman set out to make what they expected to be the first of three or four movies based on the espionage novels of Ian Fleming they can hardly have dreamed that they were founding a business that would still be going strong nearly half a century later. Yet the role of James Bond, which transformed Sean Connery's career in 1962 when Dr No came out, still retained its star-making power in 1906 when Daniel Craig made his Bond debut in Casino Royale.
Somehow, with the odd misstep along the way, the producers have contrived to keep Bond in touch with the spirit of the times, from the swinging sixties to the angst-ridden post 9/11 years.
In investigating the fascinating history of the films, Sinclair McKay has interviewed people concerned in all aspects of their production, from designer Ken Adams, who almost single-handedly gave Bond films their inimitable visual style, to the technicians, cameramen and stunt people who formed a team that has remained remarkably constant over the years. The result is a book packed with little-known facts - the Russians actually asked Albert R. Broccoli to consider creating a Russian equivalent to Bond, and he was sufficiently interested to fly to Moscow for talks - and improbable anecdotes - the iconic scene of a bikini-clad Ursula Andress in Dr No was nearly wrecked by the English poet Stephen Spender, a house guest of the Flemings at the time. And who was spotted skulking out of the 1983 TUC conference in order to see Octopussy? None other than that scourge of the Bondian lifestyle, Arthur Scargill!
