Known for the noirish crime comic Stray Bullets, Lapham turns to mainstream superheroes in a lengthy Batman arc that begins with the death of six pregnant teenagers in a tenement fire and leads to the discovery of a black-market adoption ring. As Batman goes undercover in the slums to investigate, he slowly learns of a far more sinister and elusive menace. Gotham City has always been a key element in the best Batman stories, but Lapham, with the aid of Ramon Bachs' effectively murky artwork, makes the metropolis a far greater presence as its entire population's sanity is threatened.
