Synopsis
First published in 1824, this insightful study follows the history of the steam engine from its roots in Ancient Greece through its rapid development at the turn of the 19th century. The account begins with the first recorded use of steam power by the Greek mechanic Hero and goes on to cover inventions by Savery, Papin, and Newcome as well as the significant improvements made by James Watt during the 18th century, after which steam began to power most factory machinery. Written at the height of the Industrial Revolution—a time when the use of steam engines was dramatically transforming the nature of industry—this review was the first comprehensive study of the subject. It serves as a fascinating account underpinned by sound engineering knowledge and illustrated with numerous diagrams.
