PreSchool-Grade 3–These poems are rich in sound, imagery, repetition, and surprise. On rare occasions, readers will find trams, lorries, and Yorkshire pudding. The Kitchen Orchestra has a contagious rhythm: Banging boxes, clanking pans,/Clacking spoons and tinkling cans./Tapping bottles, rattling plates,/What a noise the children make! Also included are parodies of well-known nursery rhymes that will tickle many a funny bone: Jack and Jill climbed up the hill,/Their feet, they felt like lead./Said Jack, Oh, let's not bother, Jill,/We'll go to town instead.' The illustration shows the two children at the foot of a grassy hill, with a small sign off to the side, To Town. Brightly colored cartoon drawings are interspersed among the verses of the individual poems, sometimes resulting in a zigzag effect and offering an immediate relationship between art and text. The real affection shown here for the experience of children promises to make early poetry lovers.–Teresa Pfeifer, Alfred Zanetti Montessori Magnet School, Springfield, MA

PreS-K. Hilarious rhymes and pictures in this exuberant collection bring chanting words and playful images to young children. Messy foods are favorite subjects, as are noises--in the city, in the forest, on the beach, on a runaway train. Mother Goose gets a ribbing:^B "Leave me alone!" Miss Muffet tells the spider, as she eats her ice-cream cone. The sounds of the words are part of the fun, and the rhyme and repetition, illustrated with lots of small, relaxed line-and-watercolor pictures, will have toddlers pointing and joining in, counting, and laughing aloud. For one kid, the best pet is a spider "furry, fat, and hairy," and the picture shows why. Hazel Rochman
