About the Author

Sarah Rees Brennan was born and raised in Ireland by the sea, where her teachers valiantly tried to make her fluent in Irish (she wants you to know it's not called Gaelic), but she chose to read books under her desk in class instead. After living briefly in New York and doing a creative writing MA and library work in Surrey, England, she has returned to Dublin, Ireland, to write. Her Irish is still woeful, but she feels the books under the desk were worth it. Visit her website at sarahreesbrennan.com.

From AudioFile

James Langton narrates the story of Nick and his brother, Alan, two teenagers on the run from magicians and their demon servants. Unlike Alan, Nick is not afraid of the magicians, even when their leader turns out to be his father. Nick does not feel anything except anger, and Langton captures this emotion perfectly, along with the fear of a young girl, and the love of an older brother. The tempting voices of the demons and the sly voice of Nick's father roll off Langton's tongue, while Nick is convincing as an angst-filled, dangerous teenager. Peppered with typical British irony, this production is so well done that even Langton seems surprised by the final twist. R.A. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
