Synopsis
Full of powerful, spontaneous, dramatic writing, this early version of D. H. Lawrence’s popular autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers contains more humor, charm, raw violence, and nervous energy than its finalized counterpart. It contains many discarded episodes, some of them stories from Lawrence’s childhood that are not recorded anywhere else. This volume also includes documents written by Lawrence’s girlfriend Jessie Chambers the model for Miriam in which she gives Lawrence hostile criticisms and writes out her own versions of some episodes. A fragment of a novel about Lawrence’s mother’s childhood, facsimiles of manuscript pages, maps, and scholarly notes are also provided.

Book Description
This early version of Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's highly popular autobiographical novel, has never been published before. It is very different from Sons and Lovers, less polished but full of powerful, spontaneous, dramatic writing. The volume also contains remarkable documents written by Lawrence's girlfriend Jessie Chambers, in which she gives Lawrence some very hostile criticisms and writes out for him her own versions of some of his episodes, a fragment of a novel about his mother's childhood , facsimiles of manuscript pages, maps and full scholarly notes and apparatus.
About the Author
D.H. Lawrence (1885–1930) was as a pioneer of English Modernism and is best known for his novels Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Rainbow, and Women in Love.
