About the Author:
Jeannie Johnson is the author of several previous historical sagas, including the popular 'Sugar' trilogy. Born in Bristol, she grew up on a deprived housing estate, and now combines writing with a career as a television actress. She has appeared in both Casualty and Holby City, amongst others.
From Booklist:
Two brothers—Walter the older, is ruthless and driven; William, the younger, is more honorable but ineffectual—spend their lives building the Shellard family wine business without counting the cost in human terms to those they mistreat along the way. Among the most affected is young Catherine, Walter’s illegitimate daughter with his longtime Portuguese mistress, who suddenly loses all that she holds dear when her father marries again, and her distraught mother commits suicide. Seven years later, Catherine reenters the Shellard sphere of influence when Walter arranges her marriage to Robert Freeman for business reasons. This powerful novel set between the world wars on both sides of the English Channel encompasses both tragedy and triumph while exploring the perfidy of greed and lust juxtaposed against the determination to prevail and thrive. --Lynne Welch
