About the Author:
Connie Monk is the author of numerous novels published over a period of some twenty-five years. She hails from Berkshire and lived in Bournemouth until her husband’s retirement. They now spend their time on the Costa Blanca.
From Booklist:
It's 1937 and young Englishwoman Georgie Franklyn, longing to be free to finally become an artist, decides to leave her teaching job while on vacation with her dear friend James, a widower who wants to marry her. When Georgie goes to home to celebrate her beloved stepmother Muriel's birthday, her world comes crashing down. Her father dies in a car accident, leaving a large debt and Muriel to look after. In her anguish, Georgie turns to calm and stalwart James and agrees to marry him as long as Muriel can live with them. This ideal situation becomes complicated as Georgie works at the gallery that exhibits her paintings, leaving Muriel at home fantasizing about James, while Georgie fights her attraction to her landlord until both women recognize the threat of impending war and act upon their feelings. This would be a traditional tale, except for Monk's obsessive emphasis of her women characters' bodies and need for sexual fulfillment. --Patty Engelmann
