Synopsis

Two baby brown bears are born in the mountains of Alaska. Follow them from birth to adulthood, photographed close-up in the wild by award-winning photographer Suzi Eszterhas. The text shows all the aspects of the animal's life in the wild. Watch them exploring with their mum, chasing and climbing, and then learning to catch fish and hunt for delicious clams. At last they are three years old and ready for their biggest adventure — starting families of their own. A spread at the back of the book gives further conservation information, including useful websites. Also available in the Eye on the Wild series are Cheetah, Gorilla and Lion, all by Suzi Eszterhas.

About the Author

California-based wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas spends nine months of the year shooting a wide variety of wildlife in the field. In recent years, she has specialized in documenting family life and has become well known for her unprecedented work with newborn animals. Although Eszterhas works primarily in Africa, she has undertaken commissions and led instructional photography tours and workshops everywhere from Antarctica and the Arctic to Alaska and Montana.

From Booklist

This appealing, large-format picture book introduces two little brown bears, born in Alaska in midwinter, and follows them for several years as they grow up and become independent. First seen as cubs closely guarded by their mother, the sisters drink her milk, eat grass, play fight, and nap under her watchful eye. After more than two years of teaching them how to hunt for food and protect themselves, their mother leaves. They hibernate together before going their separate ways to start families of their own. As in her previous books, Gorilla (2012) and Cheetah (2012), Eszterhas’ excellent color photos offer exceptionally clear views of particular animals growing up. Closely aligned with the photos, the large-print text comments on the bears’ activities and provides background information, while an appended page gives a few more facts about the species. Brown Bear and Lion are two new titles in this wildlife photographer’s handsome Eye on the Wild series. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan
