I wish I had
a pirate hat
a pirate hat, a pirate hat
I wish I had a pirate hat
like my mate Jack's
pirate hat
Would you rather have a pirate hat or a football? Would you like to have tea with a rabbit, bring home a pussy cat or go in a big red pedal car? And are you a good pirate or a bad pirate? Fifty fantastic poems for young children from top performance poet Roger Stevens.

Roger Stevens is a popular children's author, poet and performer who visits schools, libraries, festivals and museums all over the UK. Roger has compiled several anthologies, most recently A Million Brilliant Poems – Part One and The Jumble Book, children's poems compiled for Dyslexia Action. He recently published Able Writers in Your School, a book for teachers written with Brian Moses and has worked with students at promoting and advising on the teaching of poetry in schools.Roger's poems for children appear in more than 200 anthologies. His most recent solo collections are The Monster That Ate the Universe and Why Otters Don't Wear Socks and On My Way to School I Saw a Dinosaur - poems for younger children and a Macmillan Audio CD of Roger reading the best of his poems.Roger has co-written an opera, written children's musicals and written songs for all ages. He wrote and performed the music for Floella Benjamin's Hey Diddle Diddle, a series of programmes based on nursery rhymes, for younger children on BBC Radio 7. Some of his poems can currently be heard on CBeebies Poetry Pie. The Journal of Danny Chaucer, a verse-novel for teenagers, was adapted by Roger and broadcast on BBC Radio 4.He currently plays in the band Damn Right I Got the Blues with author Ken Follett. Roger began his award-winning website, The Poetry Zone, in 1998, specifically as a place for children to publish their own poetry. Since then it has had over two million visitors and includes interviews with poets, videos and teaching material.
Gr 2–4—A few gems sparkle in this largely unremarkable compendium of poetry. The volume is divided into three sections—"Fun Time," "School Time," and "Home Time"—and the strongest poems, one about a pirate treasure map and another about the moon, bookend the collection. Many of the selections read like children's musings about their day, and while a handful close with a clever punch line, overall they feel unfinished. The poet relies heavily on onomatopoeia and uses rhythm and rhyme to serviceable effect. Reminiscent of kids' doodles, the accompanying drawings are friendly and cartoonish. VERDICT A perfectly adequate effort, but young readers are better served by poets such as Bruce Lansky and Jack Prelutsky.—Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elementary School, Abington School District, PA
