About the Author
Andy Mitten, at age 15, started the fanzine United We Stand, which he still edits. A regular writer for FourFourTwo, he has also published work in The Independent, The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian, and GQ. Andy has written numerous books, including the critically acclaimed We're the Famous Man United, Glory Glory!, and Mad for It: From Blackpool to Barcelona, Football's Greatest Rivalries. Manchester-born and -bred, he divides his time between M16 and Barcelona.

No, this isn’t a manual about NFL fans who are waiting for UFOs to take them to the great Super Bowl in the sky—this is what the English call football, the Spanish call fútbol, the Germans call Fußball, and we call soccer. Though no definition of cult is provided, the material here is often offbeat, whether well known or barely remembered: players with amazing ability and bizarre personalities; eccentric but winning coaches (or gaffers); teams with unusual histories or rabid fans; epic games; hotly contested rivalries; and more (there are some great lists in the “Culture” chapter). Irreverent, fun, and fast-moving, it’s also quite current, including events as recent as spring 2010 (the relegation of English team Portsmouth, for example). This is not a book for the casual fan who’s just discovered soccer via Landon Donovan’s performance at the most recent World Cup—or maybe it is.
