Much has been written about Jochen Peiper, though it is unlikely he would have been heard of outside Germany but for the infamous massacre near Malmedy, Belgium, with which his name has been forever associated. Initially shunned and even despised in the years following Germany’s surrender, Peiper is now revered and generally accepted as a brilliant solider. This meticulously researched book explores Peiper’s youth, his career with the SS, the now famous trial of the officers and soldiers of the Leibstandarte, who were accused of war crimes, and Peiper’s murder in France over thirty years later.

About the Author
Major General Michael Reynolds CB joined the British Army in 1948, and was commissioned into the Queens Royal Regiment in 1950. In the course of a long and distinguished career, he served in Korea, where he was severely wounded, Northern Ireland and West Germany. On promotion to Major General he assumed command of NATO's Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (Land). In retirement, he became guest speaker on British Army and NATO battlefield tours in the Ardennes, publishing a number of detailed histories on World War 2 operations in Europe. He died in 2015.

The Devil's Adjutant: Jochen Peiper, Panzer Leader is the story of the ex-aide to Himmler who epitomized the Nazi approach to war, and describes in minute detail the combats fought by the German spearhead in the Battle of the Bulge. As the Americans advanced on the Third Reich in the fall of 1944, they encountered many enemy united of mixed quality. But when the Germans counterattacked, bursting through the U. S. front in December 1944, their offensive was led by Jochen Peiper and the 1st SS Panzer Division - an elite unit hardened in the crucibles of Russia. The Americans faced their greatest challenge in the largest battle of their history. After being sentenced at Dachau for war crimes, Peiper was assassinated by persons unknown, long after the war had ended.
