The immediate aftermath of Ireland's Easter Rising is often overlooked, often covered as a footnote. Not so in this book: picking up where the authors' acclaimed When the Clock Struck in 1916 left off, we join the participants of the Rising in the abyss of defeat. The leaders' final hours are laid bare, as is the perspective of those with the unpalatable task of executioner. While the prisoners in Dublin awaited their fates, others were deported to camps in Britain. When they returned, it was to a jubilant welcome in a radically changed country. The death of Thomas Ashe in September 1917, while in custody, became a marshalling point for the Republican movement, as his funeral saw Volunteers once again assembled in uniform on Dublin's streets. The next phase of the struggle began, under leaders who `graduated' from the internment camps known as `Republican Universities', opening the door to revolution. This account will transport readers into life as it happened in this crucial juncture of Ireland's history.
