Altounyan has already written a memoir of her youth in Syria, entitled In Aleppo Once ( LJ 4/1/71). This second effort is based on letters and diaries augmenting the personal recollections of those involved. Her multi-ethnic family included her Armenian grandfather (a physician) and his Irish wife, and her father (also a physician) and his English in-laws with connections to the literary and artistic Bloomsbury set. The daughter's reverence for her "black grandfather" and her father illuminates every page, but the figures remain shadowy and the events relived unclear. The result is incoherent and uneven, giving no clear impression of Syria between 1914 and 1957, nor of the importance of their Armenian heritage to living in the Middle East. Not recommended.

Born in England in 1917, the author was the daughter of Dora Collingwood and Ernest Altounyan, a doctor raised in England whose father was Armenian and mother Irish, and whose friends included John Ruskin, Arthur Ransome and T. E. Lawrence. In this chronicle of her family with its roots in widely different places and cultures, Altounyan tells of her childhood in Aleppo (Syria) and in England, and of her experiences of the vivid contrasts between the British empire and subjugated Armenia. This informed generational and personal history includes descriptions of massacres of Armenians by Turks during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Set down without sentimentalizing, the details of barbarity are all the more affecting.
