This life story of Paul Neal (Red) Adair, an extraordinary good ol' Texas boy, is interspersed with, and overshadowed by, stories of the famous oil well fires he extinguished from Arkansas to the Southeast Asian peninsula of Malaya. Also included are the 1988 North Sea and the 1961 Algerian blazes--the latter visible to American astronauts from their space capsule. There is great drama in Red's battles with nerve and nitro against oil disasters (John Wayne played a character based on Adair in the 1969 film Hellfighters ), and there is just enough technical detail to enthrall readers and make them accept the author's estimate of Red Adair as an all-time hero. Readers Digest plans to serialize the story, so expect patron demand for the book. --Janice Dunham, John Jay Coll. Lib., CUNY
