Hardbak. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Facsimile Edition, First Edition Thus. VG+/VG+. Facsimile Edition, First Edition Thus. This is a facsimile printing of the 1898 revised fourteenth edition. Profusely illustrated with maps. The death of General Gordon at Khartum in 1885 at the hands of the Mahdi's forces proved to be a massive blow to the British military establishment, and few could rest until his death was avenged. Amongst these was an ambitious officer Herbert Horatio Kitchener. In 1892, following several years distinguished service in Africa, Kichener became a major-general in charge of of the Egyptian army. In 1897, the author of this book joined Kitchener's troops as a correspondent as they began their 'pacification' of the Sudan. He describes in detail the various military undertakings of that expedition, culminating in a vivid and chilling description of the Battle of Omdurman at which the Mahdi's rule was finally ended. Light spotting to to-edge; light bruising to head of spine; else a very good plus copy, in a very good plus d/w. The previous owner has written on the half-title page, 'Back from Kitchener/Island at Aswan Nile/this book in the "robbed by" the/British Museum/Preter Xmas 2002/Next stop.'. Seller Inventory # 18559

In 1892, following several years distinguished service in Africa, Kitchener became a major-general in charge of the Egyptian army. His reorganisation and training of those forces over the next five years had one aim in view: the defeat of the Mahdi in the Sudan. In 1897, the author of this work joined Kitchener's troops as a correspondent as they began their first moves towards the 'pacification' of the Sudan. He describes in detail the various military undertakings of that expedition, culminating in a vivid and chilling description of the Battle of Omdurman at which the Mahdi's rule was finally ended.
