This addition to the First Discovery Close-ups series invites readers to punch out the magnifying glass in the back. It has no lens to magnify anything, though the gimmick does somewhat amuse, as the white backing of the tool highlights otherwise hard-to-see aspects of six rain forest creatures printed upon dark translucent pages. Zeroing in from an aerial view to a colorful array of flora and fauna, the book affords individual readers a closer look at the strange half-lit world of the rain forest, including short, colorful examinations of such animals as hummingbirds, katydid grasshoppers, and heliconid caterpillars (It devours the leaves of the passionflower). It’s entertaining, but the limited page space equals limited information, making this vibrant, sturdy, spiral-bound book more of a fun intro than one for research. Grades K-3. --Patricia Austin
