Synopsis

This series aims to help teenagers make up their own minds on some of the most controversial contemporary issues around the world. The arguments on different sides of each issue are illustrated by means of quotations taken from a variety of different sources - government statistics, independent experts, public figures and people with personal experience of the subject. Readers are guided through the arguments by a running narrative that introduces the quotations and their sources and endeavours to put them into context. Facts and statistics on each subject are featured in information boxes throughout. Questions at the end of each chapter focus the reader's attention on the key areas of debate, and the series is intended as useful resource material for current affairs, history, politics and social studies courses. Covering a broad political spectrum, this book examines the issues surrounding terrorism - its origins, causes, aims and practice, the responses of governments to terrorist activity, and possible future developments and their ecological implications.

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-Jamieson provides historical and modern perspectives on this societal problem, with a look toward future international efforts to combat it. She gives basic information and, though offering an international perspective, concentrates on the situations in Northern Ireland and the Middle East. The sentences are at times complex and have a challenging vocabulary. The typeface is quite small, resulting in a book that is cluttered and potentially intimidating. The black-and-white and full-color photographs are bland and dated. ``Fact File'' and ``Media Watch'' insets appear intermittently. A brief bibliography, index, and a listing of primarily European agency contacts for further information are appended. Keith Greenberg's Terrorism (Millbrook, 1994), while similar in design and emphasis, is more attractive and accessible, thus remaining the title of choice.-Celia A.
