From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2 The emphasis is on puzzle- solving in this mild retelling of a favor ite story. Based on the German, this simplified version has the wolf devour ing Grandma and Red, who are resur rected by a passing woodcutter. But this wolf doesn't lure Red away from the straight and narrow in the woods; instead, she dilly-dallies along the path, on her own. Naturally, the form imposes some limitations of content and mood on the telling, and the re buses do make for a jerky cadence, but they are fun to play with. Their meaning is generally clear from the pictures themselves or from the con text, and the story's familiarity helps too. If meaning still eludes, a rebus dictionary in the back of the book pre sents the pictures and their meanings in their order of appearance in the sto ry. The colors are clear and bright, both in the rebus pictures and in the larger illustrations, and composition and design give the pages a light, open feeling in keeping with the playful con cept. Full of psychological undertones it isn't; but it is fun, cheerful, and well-executed. Karen Litton, Con federation Centre Public Library, Charlottetown, P.E.I., Canada

From Publishers Weekly

This sweetly illustrated volume tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood in large print interspersed with rebuses. The rebuses range from actual pictures of people and thingsLittle Red Riding Hood, for instanceto symbols for parts of words that make sense when added to the nearby letters (e.g., the numeral "1" plus "dered" equals "wondered"), and letters and numerals meant to represent their homonyms ("2" for "to"). The story has regular illustrations as well as the rebuses, and while some of the symbols will take a bit of puzzling through, this is a charming and inventive version of the favorite tale. However, some readers may find a niggling flaw: Little Red Riding Hood's mother cautions her not to wander off the path; but it's an empty warning, because she divulges her destinationGrandma's housewhile still on the trail. Ages 4-8.
