Grade 2-4-- A survey of modern and futuristic aircraft with painted illustrations that feature greatly simplified, cutaway views under flaps. Much of the paper engineering is elaborate and fragile, and the detailing is inconsistent: some cockpits have pilots, others are empty; the nose-tip of the Concorde looks virtually the same whether its tiny flap is lifted or not; and the same missile is labeled twice on the jet fighter while several objects in the fuselage remain unidentified. Next to Marshall's The Plane (Viking, 1985; o.p.) and a plethora of books on the subject without special effects, this doesn't get off the ground. --John Peters, New York Public Library
