Book Description hardcover. 1991 reprint. xvi, 348pp, decorative boards, Fine. A Limited Edition of 450 copies, this copy is not numbered. A lovely reprint retaining much of the appearance of the original First Edition. The official account of the expedition was by Borchgrevink under the title of First on the Antarctic Continent in 1901, but Bernacchi had also been busy writing and his account of the expedition was also published in 1901. Bernacchi was the first Australian to play a significant part in Antarctic exploration. His father was from Italy where they owned large estates on the shores of Lake Como. His father visited Tasmania on a cruise and liked it so much that he subsequently established a farm on Maria island and this is where Louis grew up. An intelligent boy who loved the sciences he was anxious for adventure and after just missing out on joining the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in 1897 he travelled to London in 1898 and persuaded Borchgrevink to take him as the expedition physicist. As a result he became one of the first party to overwinter on the Antarctic continent. Bernacchi s account is a gem of Antarctic literature, even if he did confine most of his personal feelings, not infrequently negative ones, to his journal. To him we are indebted for many beautiful literary images of the voyage. Bernacchi was only 26 years old when his book was published but he already had an unmistakable writing ability which he illustrated attractively with his own photographs.
