This book contains 48 papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design of Structures (OPTI 97). The conference was held in Rome, Italy, September 8-10, 1997. It was organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology, Southampton, UK; the University of La Corua, La Corua, Spain; and the Facolta di Ingegneria, Universita "La Sapienza", Rome, Italy. The conferences have been held every two years since 1989, alternately in the US and Europe. The conferences have provided structural optimization researchers from around the world the opportunity to exchange new ideas. The book thus provides state-of-the-art information on the research and industrial applications of structural optimization.

The 48 papers in the book are presented in 7 groups: Large, Complex and continuum Structures; Design Optimization; New Methods and Reliability Based Design; Shape, Topology and Material Optimization; Design Sensitivity Analysis; Optimal Control and Identification; and Structural Optimization in Nonlinear Problems.

The papers presented at OPTI '97 demonstrate the maturity reached in the field of structural optimization, which has progressed from a purely research topic to one with many industrial applications in a range of engineering fields. Thus, contributions in the published work deal with applications in fields ranging from mechanical, aerospace, and automotive to civil and structural engineering. Some papers related to large structures in complex systems, demonstrating how optimization tools can be applied to solve realistic design problems.

The papers included in the proceedings cover a broad range of analyses, from static to dynamic, as well as partly deterministic and probabilistic approaches and linear and non-linear problems. The section on design sensitivity analysis is particularly important because the identification of those derivatives is a fundamental tool in current optimization processes.
