This book contains 66 papers presented at the Twentieth International Conference on Boundary Element Methods in Engineering, held in Orlando, Florida, August 19-21, 1998. The conference was organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology, Southampton, UK and the University of Central Florida, and sponsored by the Florida section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and by the International Society of Boundary Elements.
BEM has matured into a well-established method for engineering analysis and continues to be a very active area of research. The method has been successfully applied to solve difficult engineering and scientific problems, including the solution of non-linear and time-dependent problems, while considerable advances have been made in the solution of complex fluid dynamics problems and the use of high performance computing. In some areas of complex problems (e.g. fracture mechanics) its accuracy has made it the method of choice. Practicing engineers are also finding more and more uses for the powerful yet simple-to-use technique, as an analysis and design tool.
The annual conference itself has been internationally recognized since its inception as THE forum for boundary element research. The volume thus includes contributions from a large number of well-established practitioners and leading researchers in the field. This particular conference combined both theoretical research and practical applications. The 66 papers in the book thus reflect the state of the art in boundary element research and constitute a record of the latest developments in the technique. The papers are organized into the following categories: Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue, Inelastic Problems, Contact Mechanics, Electromagnetics, Computational Techniques, Inverse Problems, Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics, Acoustics, Corrosion, Elastodynamics, Thermal Problems, and Geometrically Non-Linear Problems.

A joint meeting of the largely theoretical BEM Boundary Element Method series and the more practically oriented BETECH Boundary Element Technology series, the Conference blended both of these aspects together to push back the frontiers of BEM still further. Topics covered include fracture mechanics and fatigue, inelastic problems, contact mechanics, electromagnetics, fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, acoustics, corrosion, elastodynamics and thermal problems.
