This textbook gives an introduction to and a description of the historical development of plate heat exchangers (PHE). Various types of PHEs and their application areas are discussed. Limitations and opportunities are clearly demonstrated. Analysis of the thermal and hydraulic performance is presented and various correlations based on experimental investigations are provided. Two-phase situations, particularly condensation and evaporation, are covered, Practical issues like fouling and gasketing materials are discussed. Modern methods for experimental and computational investigations are reviewed. Research needs are discussed.

Lieke Wang has been a researcher in the Division of Heat Transfer at the Lund Institute of Technology for over six years.
Bengt Sundén (M. Sc.,Mechanical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, Ph.D., thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, Chalmers University) was appointed Docent (the highest academic degree in Sweden) at Chalmers University in 1980 and held positions there as Research Associate, Docent and University lecturer. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer at Lund University (Engineering faculty = Lund Institute of Technology), Lund, Sweden. Professor Sundén has been teaching undergraduate courses in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Basic Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Numerical Heat Transfer. He has taught graduate courses in Heat Transfer, Heat and Mass Transfer, Convective Boiling and Condensation, Numerical Flow Simulation, Thermal Radiation, Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer in Combustion Processes. He has supervised more than 135 M. Sc. theses, many of them in cooperation with industries. He has also taught a number of in-house courses for some companies. His current research topics are: Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers, e.g., radiators, oil coolers; numerical methods of convective flow and heat transfer in complex narrow geometries, e.g., cooling of combustor walls, recuperators and intercoolers in gas turbine systems; combustion related heat transfer including thermal radiation, gas turbine heat transfer, evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers, thermal imaging techniques, heat exchanger networks (process integration), heat and mass transfer topics (e.g., fuel cells).
Professor Sundén has published approximately 300 papers in well-recognized journals, books and proceedings. He has also delivered several invited lectures and papers. He has been editor of thirteen books published by international publishing houses. Two textbooks (presently in Swedish) have been issued. Professor Sundén is involved in referee tasks for more than twenty-five international journals and has been active in several international and organizing committees, boards etc. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers. He is also editor-in-chief for a book series Developments in Heat Transfer. In addition, he is in the editorial board for another four journals. Professor Sunden is a fellow of ASME. From 2005, he will serve as associate editor of the prestigious ASME Journal of Heat Transfer.
Raj M. Manglik is Director of the Thermal-Fluids & Thermal Processing Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Nuclear Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He is also a Fellow of ASME International and has served as Associate Editor, ASME Journal of Heat Transfer; Editor, Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer; Technical Editor, Heat Transfer & Fluid Flow Data Books; Member of Editorial Board, International Journal of Heat Exchangers. His primary research interests are Interfacial phenomena, Boiling heat transfer, Enhancement of heat transfer, Non-Newtonian flows, Biological thermal-fluid systems, Fuel cells, Compact heat exchangers, Micro-scale devices (heat sinks, sensors, etc.), Metal quenching, Experimental techniques, Computational heat transfer, Molecular dynamics of surface-active additives
