Women and their doctors are divided about how to approach menopause. Some feel it is a natural event which should normally not need treatment. Others believe that some of the consequences of falling oestrogen levels, such as hot flushes and osteoporosis, require treatment. The aim of this book is to provide unbiased and non-promotional information about menopause and its management, including women with special needs such as those with early menopause. It is designed to help patients to understand what happens during menopause, the various treatment options and alternative therapies available to help them deal with these symptoms , as well as advice on staying healthy through this often troublesome phase and beyond. The Menopause: What You Need to Know is based on the British Menopause Society Handbook written by experts for doctors and nurses. All of those involved in healthcare provision to women will find this an excellent book for recommending to their patients.

At last a book that we can really trust to help women like myself through the menopause... There is a great checklist at the back to help talking to your GP much easier. It is great to see a book written by experts in the field of the menopause. This is a must for any woman about to [experience] or experiencing the menopause.
Customer review of the first edition from Amazon.co.uk
It is aimed not only at health professionals but also at women experiencing the menopause as well as their families...The editors of this book are undoubtedly experts in the field of menopause with many years of experience in this area and so have a wealth of knowledge to share...I would highly recommend this book as it is well written, clear and concise at just over 100 pages. It is not too heavy a read and sections on what to expect from tests and lists of personal or family medical problems you should inform your doctor about and make it very patient friendly. I am tempted to buy my GP a copy!

This is a book I see having a wide audience, not to be lent out, but kept as a reference for the journey through this difficult time. I have no hesitation in recommending it to healthcare professionals as a handy desk reference, and at the price quoted, to my patients in the clinic. It will empower many to make their own decisions without challenging the expertise of their GP.
Synergy News, September 2006
This comprehensive book lives up to its title, with information on all aspects of the menopause...based on sound medical advice originally written for doctors and nurses by top UK menopause experts...Each section includes a list of useful addresses and references for further information. There is also a glossary at the end, explaining common medical terms. This is a useful guide for anyone interested in the menopause.
The Menopause Exchange
It provides a concise yet adequate overview of menopause and its management...easy to understand diagrams and useful summary boxes...In conclusion, this book would particularly suit tertiary-educated perimenopausal and menopausal women who want a short but comprehensive overview of the issues related to menopause and a useful guide to further sources of reliable information.
Australasian Menopause Society
This excellent book explains the menopause using terms that are easily accessible... Informative, practical and user-friendly, the short chapters and open layout enable the reader to dip in and out of the book and find what is relevant quickly. I would recommend this book without reservation.
Nursing Standard, November 2006
This excellent little book is to be recommended to the educated and interested woman who needs information to make decisions regarding the management of her menopause. I shall be recommending it to my patients.
The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist 2007
The Menopause: What You Need To Know combines good medical knowledge with information that is easy for the lay person to understand. I have read many books recently on the menopause, but none written so succinctly or with as much information. This is an excellent source of information and would be a welcome edition to any physiotherapy department, both for staff and for patient loan.
