From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-- After being gently shooed away from the cake mixing in the kitchen, two-year-old Alice discovers a large blue tablecloth and fashions an afternoon of imaginative play. In the company of her orange cat, she finally builds a cozy tent, and the aroma of cake lulls her to sleep. The story ends with the happy discovery of the great blue cloth spread upon the table with the cake decorated for Alice's third birthday. Van der Beek's simple, playful story will capture the interest of children ready to graduate from board books. The brevity of the text makes it a good read-aloud choice for very young listeners. The pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings are cartoon-like and occasionally awkward, but show both the mischief and magic of a young child. Van der Beek's style is soft and colorful. The layout is nicely varied and simpler than her work in Superbabe! (Putnam, 1988). The drawings have the realism but none of the meanness found in her illustrations for The Bad Babies' Book of Colors (Knopf, 1987). They carry the story well. --Virginia E. From Publishers Weekly:
While her mother prepares a cake, Alice and her cat Tom Tippler hinder more than help the process. Then Alice discovers a blue cloth, which she pretends is a queen's royal robe, a knight's cloak, the deep blue sea and eventually a tent in which she takes a nap. When she wakes up, it is to the sight of a birthday cake on the table, covered by the beloved blue cloth. Appealing in its celebration of a toddler's vivid imagination, this book features witty watercolors; van der Beek captures Alice's lively personality, the cat's aloof participation and the mother's gamine appearance. Ages 2-5.
