PreSchool-K A soothing story for youngsters who want to make peace with nighttime enemies. Even though Alexander's mother assures him that nighttime shadows are harmless, he knows what they are: a witch, a giant, a bear, and worsea dragon. Acting on his dad's advice to ``scare it off or make friends with it,'' Alexander dons his armor and whops the snarling dragon on the nose. The vanquished beast is enticed from under the bed, and peace is made. With his new friend for company, Alexander is no longer afraid of shadows. Illustrations in watercolor and pen and ink are especially good at expressing Alexander's fears. When mother leaves, the room seems a normal size. On the next page, curtains, chest, and door loom as creatures to scare Alexander. Faint wallpaper faces grin at the boy as he fearfully races downstairs. Later, the friendly dragon is resplendant with unfurled polka-dot wings. Text and pictures are given breathing space by generous white backgrounds. On the same theme but with a twist at the end are Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (1968) and There's an Alligator Under My Bed (1987, both Dial). Dragons who fear humans are memorable in Crowe's Clyde Monster (Dutton, 1976) and Willis' The Monster Bed (Lothrop, 1987). Jane Saliers, Atlanta Public Library
