Grade 2-4 King Parsimonious makes life miserable for the servants in his crumbling castle because he is too stingy to repair the leaks or to buy firewood. One day when the servants are gone, the king has to deal with the drafts himself, and in the process catches a bad cold. He learns his lesson and repairs the palace amidst generaland warmrejoicing. The king's continual alliterative outbursts of rage annoy rather than entertain. The illustrations, in unattractive tones of turquoise, mauve, and peach, are static, and show little of the action described in the story.
