Some poems seem tap-rooted into the human heart. Welsh poet Bidgood's works have that deep, thirsty quality. Her subjects are common if not commonplace: casual happenings overheard, seasonal changes, country gossip, the land's changing face. But the deep authority of her words makes this a collection worth savoring. The book proceeds in reverse chronology, Bidgood's latest and most powerful stuff first. Not that her early work is slight; rather, in comparison to her latest, it appears hesitant and careful. Of late, Bidgood has come into her voice quite solidly. In a brief poem about an earthquake, she describes the onrushing disaster as sounding like "a train / tunnelling through the hill" as daffodils shudder in their vase "long enough / for incredulity to crystallize." When the quakes cease, we are left with the assurance of "fire-hearted earth / ungovernable, even here." Bidgood is a poet's poet, a rare find. Pat Monaghan
