Davy Duckling has always longed to explore. When he meets some swallows on their way south for the winter, he wants to go along too, but they tell him he's too little for such a dangerous journey.

PreSchool-Grade 1. Although Davy Duckling inhabits an idyllic world of clear blue streams, lush green countryside, and blazing autumnal trees, he envies the swallows that soar above him, and asks if he can go along when they fly south for the winter. The birds laugh at him and tell him that their journey is too long and too dangerous. Miffed, Davy sets out on his own. At first, the paintings' lighthearted splashes of color reflect the duck's naive self-confidence. Later, shrouded in darkness, he shines like a fluffy yellow light bulb. As he paddles across the water and waddles along the terrain, he believes that he is encountering the foretold menaces (shark-infested seas, treacherous peaks, fiery deserts), and at this point the illustrations do not conclusively prove otherwise. Surely those closely set orbs glowing in the night are the eyes of wild desert animals and the towering beasts on the grassy plain must be giraffes. But just as a predator pounces on Davy, Mother Duck swoops down, rescuing her son. She gives him a ride home, and from the air viewers can now see the true nature of Davy's trek. The "sea" was a pond, the "giraffes" were horses, and the "wild desert animals" were automobile headlights. It is questionable, however, whether children will make the connection between these tiny figures shown from an aerial view and the looming shapes that threatened the duckling in the earlier illustrations. Unfortunately, this lack of clarity means that the story, like Davy, can't really go very far.?Peggy Morgan, The Library Network, Southgate, MI
