Synopsis

The eighth edition of this work contains extensive coverage of statutory changes, including those made by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997. The impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 is fully examined. There is also detailed coverage of the framework for disclosure, introduced by the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996. The book explains what happens before the accused appears in court, the way in which prosecutions are commenced, legal aid and bail. It then describes the proceedings in the magistrates' court including what happens in summary trial, committal for sentence and for trial, as well as proceedings in the youth court. Trial indictment is described in detail and the author deals with sentencing and appeals. The book includes a model brief.

About the Author

John Sprack practised for a number of years as barrister and is now Course Leader for the LLM in criminal litigation at the Inns of Court School of Law. He is a Reader at the ICSL and co-ordinates the teaching of criminal litigation on the Bar Vocational Course. He is the contributing editor of the Procedure section of Blackstone's Criminal Practice and is co-author of Criminal Evidence and Procedure: The Essential Framework.
