From Booklist:
PreS-Gr. 2. This stunning visual alphabet, a combination of photographs and contemporary graphics, highlights art in its many forms. In the first picture, a young girl paints her hand and leaves her handprint on the opposite page. In the next one, colorful Jackson Pollackesque paint spatters are superimposed on a black-and-white photo of a child identified as "artist." Painted balloons, colorful blocks, butterflies, and a book decorate the B page. The spread for the letter E is a photo of an exhibition of distinctly childlike pictures, professionally framed and hung on gallery walls. Most spreads are visually appealing and will intrigue youngsters (don't miss the spotted ruby slippers, worn with short golf socks for S), but the W spread, while interesting from a technical standpoint, is nearly impossible to discern, as the words and pictures hidden in the forest photo can only be seen when the book is held at a certain angle. That and a few Briticisms (colouring and wellies) notwithstanding, this is an elegant offering that will encourage creativity and artistic expression. Kay Weisman
