Synopsis
Jean Rhys was obsessed with Jane Eyre—and more particularly with Bertha Mason, the first Mrs. Rochester and the "madwoman in the attic." Placing Bertha on stage throughout as Jean’s alter ego, Polly Teale’s remarkable dramatization of Rhys’ life gives full vent to this obsession—which was to prove the catalyst for The Wild Sargasso Sea.

About the Author
Polly Teale has directed acclaimed productions at the Gate Theatre and Donmar Warehouse in London. She has also worked at Nottingham Playhouse, Theatr Clwyd and the Oxford Stage Company. Her adaptation of Jane Eyre is also published by Nick Hern Books and available from TCG.
